Initiatives, Projects and Reviews

Alberta Centennial Education Savings Plan
The Alberta Centennial Education Savings Plan is a program designed to give Alberta parents an incentive to start planning and saving for their children’s post-secondary education as early as possible. The plan will make available $500 towards a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) for every child born to or adopted by Alberta residents in 2005 and after. Subsequent grants of $100 will be available to children attending school in Alberta at ages 8, 11 and 14, starting in 2013.

Faculty Attraction and Retention Working Group Report
A working group was established to examine the ability of Alberta’s post-secondary institutions to attract and retain faculty. Based on stakeholder submissions, 12 recommendations were proposed in this final report.

First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education Policy Framework - Progress Report
Update on the progress made since the release of the FNMI Education Policy Framework. Provides an update of current work toward improving Aboriginal learner success.

Learning and Technology Policy Framework
The Learning and Technology Policy Framework provides direction for the infusion of technology across Alberta’s learning system. Developed with extensive stakeholder input, the Policy Framework will help ensure that technology integration effectively supports learning system objectives and benefits learners.

Mission to Asia
In 2002, the department led a mission to Asia with representatives of Alberta's schools and post-secondary institutions to strengthen and expand international education initiatives in Japan, China, Vietnam and Thailand. The mission report includes highlights and achievements.

MLA Committee on Lifelong Learning
This MLA committee was established in June 1999, to seek the views of stakeholders and other Albertans on strategies to encourage and enable adults to return to learning as a means of improving their employment potential and realizing their career goals.

MLA Post-Secondary Funding Review
The MLA Post-Secondary Funding Review Committee was created to review and make recommendations on the approach used to allocate funding to Alberta's publicly funded post-secondary institutions. In January 2001, the government released a final report.

Pilot Project re: Centralized Document Production Northwestern Alberta / Northeastern B.C.
Established to explore the benefits of making a broad range of effective document and multimedia production services more easily accessible to school jurisdictions and post secondary institutions. Government's project partners are Xerox Canada Ltd. and the Grande Prairie Public School District.

Strategic Framework Review
Government established a post-secondary framework review to identify key strategies and future directions to take Alberta's post-secondary system through the next decade and ensure Alberta continues to have a world-class post-secondary system.
