The Alberta
College of Optometrists (ACO) is the regulatory
body for the profession of optometry in Alberta, establishing
the criteria for member registration and ensuring that optometrists
practice their profession in the best interests of the public.
Optometry has evolved as a profession for over 100 years.
It has been regulated by Government since 1920. All optometrists
applying for registration in Alberta had to have their academic
credentials approved by the Universities Coordinating Council.
This condition persisted until the Optometry Profession Act
of 1973, when sole responsibility for credentialing and registration
was given to the Alberta Association of Optometrists.
Advancements in education, training and technology have ensured
that optometrists remain leaders in the provision of comprehensive
eye and visual health care services. In 1993, with amendments
to the Optometry Profession Act, Government mandated the establishment
of this College of Optometrists for the regulation of the
optometry profession in Alberta.
The Alberta College of Optometrists functions
in accordance with the Alberta Health Professions Act (HPA),
the Optometrists Profession Regulation and the ACO Bylaws. |
