Alberta’s competitive athletes will soon have important support services closer to home, thanks to three partnerships between Alberta colleges and the provincial and federal sport agencies.
The new Alberta Sport Development Centres will be located in:
- Fort McMurray
- Grande Prairie
- Medicine Hat
They join an existing centre in Red Deer to form the Alberta Sport Development Centres Network. They will be run by colleges in each of these cities, providing services such as:
- nutritional counselling
- sport medicine advice
- physical testing
- psychological preparation
- advanced coaching
The centres will also provide educational opportunities for coaches, volunteers and sports administrators.
All four centres will work with the Canadian Sport Centre Calgary to provide top-level services to Alberta athletes competing at a provincial or Canada Games level. The services will complement what is already available through national and provincial sport associations, municipalities and other institutions.
The Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation will provide $80,000 a year to each of the centres, with part of that funding coming from Sport Canada. The colleges will also provide operational support.
The Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation supports participation in sport, recreation and physical activity, athletic excellence and the preservation of natural environments in Alberta.
