Call of the Land Calendar for October 26, 2006

 And on our Call of the Land Calendar....There are three Alberta Beef Producer meetings tonight—7:30 p.m. at the Pincher Creek Livestock Auction, 7 p.m. at the Bigstone Hall, and a 7 p.m. meeting at the Beaver Meadows Community Hall at Niton Junction. There is a free supper at 6 p.m. preceding the Niton Junction Meeting. For a complete listing of meetings, go to www.albertabeef.org.

This week-end, on Saturday, the Alberta Sheep and Wool Commission kicks off its zone meetings, with a meeting at Sven Eriksen’s in Lethbridge, getting underway with lunch at noon, followed by the meeting at 1 p.m.

On Sunday, Bruno Wiskel presents his Negotiating Seismic Contracts on Private Land course at the Devonian Botanic Gardens. Call 780-987-2460. The course will be offered next month in both Two Hills and Flatbush.

Next week is also busy. There are a couple of events for cattlemen. First Building Today for Tomorrow is on Tuesday at the Hardisty Community Hall, a seminar designed to develop skills and knowledge to build your cattle herd. Topics include extending the grazing season, manure nutrients, and managing cow costs through managed grazing. You are asked to pre register by tomorrow by calling Kristin at 780-384-4100 or Jenifer at 1-866-828-6774. November 1st sees the Clearwater county Cattlemen’s Day, being held at the 4-Clover Ranch and Dovercourt Hall, featuring an optional swath grazing tour, an overview of why cattle data is important, a presentation on Cow Sense, among other things. You are asked to pre-register for this by Monday by calling 845-4444.

Monday and Tuesday sees information sessions on Branding Canada, an initiative designed to help take Canada’s strong international image and leverage it to increase the sales and profile of Canadian agriculture and food products. These sessions, put on by Agriculture Canada, are for industry associations and exporters to discuss the Branding tools, how they are being used, and how they can benefit the Canadian industry. The first session is in Edmonton on Monday, the second in Calgary on Tuesday. Each goes from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. For information call Pamela Meier-Duthie at 780-495-4143.

The Country Roads Agri-Preneur network is back after taking the summer months off. The first meeting this fall is Thursday afternoon at the Alberta Agriculture office in Camrose. Martine Bolinger, who has been very active with the LEARN Agri-Food Group in the Peace River region, will highlight the history and continued success of this networking group. You are asked to pre-register by Tuesday by calling Lisa Sharp at 780-679-5169.
