Call of the Land Calendar for November 20, 2006

 And on our Call of the Land Calendar....It’s a busy week again with a number of meetings and workshops. First off, there’s a community planning session in Fairview, aimed at developing a community plan to enhance economic growth in the area. The meeting takes place over the course of two evenings, Monday and Wednesday at the NAIT Administration Building. Call Kamie at 780-835-4024.

Optimizing Your Production, an information session, focusing on marketing information and crop diagnostics to enable you to capitalize on your production, is set for Tuesday in Wainwright. Market Specialist Neil Blue will be giving a crop market update, while Sandi Scott with the Alberta Research Council will be talking on recognizing herbicide injury in crops and residue and tank contamination. The event is taking place Tuesday at the Wainwright Communiplex from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Call the MD Office at 780-842-4454.

Alberta Pulse Growers Zone 3 holding a seminar and annual meeting on Wednesday at the Westlock Community Hall, getting underway at 11:30 a.m. On the agenda—growing nitrogen with pulse crops, pulse prices and other protein crops, lupin production, and a zero tannin faba bean update, followed by the annual zone meeting. You are asked to register for lunch at 780-674-8268.

Also on Wednesday, the Sexsmith Co-Op Seed Cleaning Plant is holding its AGM. Breakfast is from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Sexsmith Curling Rink, with the AGM to follow.

There’s another event of note on Wednesday—the 6th annual Beef and Dairy Fundraising Sale for the Canadian Foodgrains Bank. Anyone interested in taking part by donating an animal, can call Arnie Tenbrinke at 403-782-7950 or Larry Henderson at 403-782-5218. The sale takes place on Wednesday at noon at Vold Jones & Vold Auctions in Ponoka, with proceeds going to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.

The Direct Seeding Advantage conference takes place in Nisku on Wednesday and Thursday. The conference will feature some excellent researchers and agronomists discussing issues that are key to successful direct seeding. Conference details are available at www.reducedtillage.ca.

There’s an Environmental Farm Plan Workshop in Eckville on November 23 and 30. Call Don and Elaine Lysons at 403-783-8245. For a complete listing of workshops, go to www.albertaEFP.com.

Still on Thursday the 23rd, an Energy Saving Seminar at the Peers Community Hall, getting underway at 1 p.m. Topics include designing and heating with the sun and biofuels. Call the Yellowhead County Wildwood Office at 1-800-814-3935.
