| | For 30 years, Alberta's Green Certificate Program has helped young Albertans learn about agriculture and gain experience in an ever-increasing number of agriculture areas. People have always been regarded as the greatest asset to the program. The dedication and commitment of many Albertans have seen the program survive and grow over the years.
On July 9, 2006, the Green Certificate Program is celebrating the achievements and contributions of one person in particular who has spear-headed the program and fought for it with passion and steadfast devotion. That person is Walter Scott of Vermilion.
As a Green Certificate coordinator, Scott created an amazing name for himself and for the program. His name is synonymous with the program. When you mention Walter Scott people think Green Certificate, and when you mention the Green Certificate Program, people ask about Walter.
"Scott has been a large part of the program for the past 30 years," says Raelene Mercer, Green Certificate Program coordinator, Edmonton. "He has always recognized the value of the program for agriculture and the agricultural communities. He never doubted that the program could be where it is today. His compassion and dedication to this program is an inspiration to many of the Green Certificate high school coordinators who have worked with him. He is a large reason why they work so hard to keep the program alive in their schools for their students."
In 2005, at an awards function in Edmonton, the Green Certificate Program was presented an award for excellence. Minister of Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, Doug Horner talked about the Green Certificate Program and the value it brings to agriculture.
"Walter is a passionate advocate for youth in agriculture and the Green Certificate Program," says Mercer. "He has seen all the ups and downs across the 30 years of his involvement with the program. In all this time, his enthusiasm and belief in the program and its value has never faltered. He is truly an asset to the Green Certificate Program."
Dedication and determination are attributes Scott has always demonstrated. He, along with his wife Jan, passed on a strong determination and love for life to their daughter, Olympic Gold Medalist Becky Scott. In recognition of Scott's tireless efforts, attitudes and contributions, the Green Certificate Program and others who work with Scott are celebrating his 30 years of service at a Family BBQ on July 9, 2006 at the Vermilion Provincial Park at the CN Station. During the come-and-go afternoon, those in attendance will have an opportunity to share their memorable stories of Scott. There will be a formal program starting at 3:00 p.m.
