Edmonton, Alberta
"We cant be complacent. Alberta has the lowest overall business taxes in Canada, but we are competing in a global economy and that means we must make sure we are competitive on a global scale. This review will tell us where we stand and what we must do to remain competitive."
"In January, our new personal income tax system will be fully in place, saving Albertans more than half a billion dollars in the first two years. This came as a direct result of input from Albertans and the Alberta Tax Review Committees work," said Day. "Now its the Business Tax Review Committees turn."
The committee has been asked to do the following:
The committee will advertise for written submissions from Albertans, which will form a key part of the groups research.
"Im looking forward to seeing what the committee comes up with. We have an impressive group of very qualified individuals representing a wide range of backgrounds," Day said, adding that it was difficult to make the final selection because there were so many qualified people interested in serving on the committee.
A list of committee members and the committees terms of reference are attached.

Alberta Business Tax Review Committee
Terms of Reference
In 2001, the province will move to a new personal income tax system in response to the 1998 recommendations of the Alberta Tax Review Committee. These changes will result in lower personal income taxes for all Albertans, encourage economic growth and enhance our competitive position.
The government recognizes that business taxes also affect the economy and our competitiveness. The Provincial Treasurer is therefore appointing the Alberta Business Tax Review Committee to examine the level and mix of provincial business taxes including the following:
The review will examine the impact of business taxes on Albertas economic and business climate, our international competitiveness, the impact of technology on business and commerce, and will include recommendations promoting Albertas well-being.
The Committee will submit a report to the Provincial Treasurer by September 1, 2000.
