"Mr. Martin says he's willing to cut gasoline taxes if the provinces step up to the plate. Well, today we are stepping up to the plate."

Provincial Treasurer Steve West

Alberta urges Ottawa to move on fuel tax reductions

Provincial Treasurer Steve West sent a letter to Federal Finance Minister Paul Martin today, urging him to act on the pledge he made publicly last month. At the time, Martin said he would consider cutting Federal fuel taxes as long as provincial taxes were also cut.

In his letter, West wrote: "Please advise me of the rate reduction you would consider and the anticipated duration of the reduction." The plan is to cut taxes temporarily to offer relief to taxpayers feeling the crunch at the fuel pumps due to the recent high price of oil.

"Alberta has come to the table and wants to know what the federal government is suggesting. Mr. Martin, it's your move."

A copy of the letter is attached.
