Cold Lake - Beaver River Water Management Plan

Besides providing a healthy aquatic environment for wildlife and fisheries, the Cold Lake-Beaver River Basin is a water source for agricultural, domestic, irrigation, municipal, industrial, and recreational users.

A long period of below normal precipitation combined with recent increases in industrial development and population growth has resulted in a need to review and update the 1985 Water Management Plan to assess demands being placed on this important resource.

Partnerships in Water Management - We are updating the 1985 Cold Lake- Beaver River Water Management Plan in partnership with the Lakeland Industry and Community Association (LICA), with agencies that have an interest or mandate affected by the plan, and in consultation with stakeholders and the public. LICA and Alberta Environment co-chair the Basin Advisory Committee, a multi-stakeholder group that provides advice on how water should be managed within the basin.

The Water Management Plan Update will assess:

  • Groundwater quality and quantity
  • Surface water quality and quantity
  • Groundwater and surface water flows and interactions
