Battle River Basin Water Management Plan
The Battle River Basin Geographically, the basin covers approximately 30,000 square kilometres (17,667 square miles), with 25,000 square kilometres (13,857 square miles) within Alberta’s borders. Extremely rich and diverse in plant and animal life, the basin’s water supply is derived entirely from local surface runoff (rain and snow melt) and groundwater flows, without the benefit of mountain/foothill snow packs and glacial melt that contribute to many river basins in Alberta.
Water Management in the Battle River Basin
In keeping with the watershed management approach outlined in Water for Life: Alberta’s Strategy for Sustainability, Alberta Environment is working to establish a Watershed Planning and Advisory Council, with representatives from the community, industry and government, to develop a water management plan for the Battle River Basin. The Battle River Basin Watershed Management Plan will recommend water management guidelines, priorities and strategies that will provide direction for future planning and management within the basin. The Terms of Reference for phase one of the plan outline the key elements required for the process, including background information, objectives, participants and timelines.
