South Saskatchewan River Basin
Approved Water Management Plan
The water management plan for the South Saskatchewan River Basin (SSRB) consolidates Phase One and the subsequent Phase Two
of the water management plan for the SSRB.
The main purpose of the second phase of the plan was to recommend how much flow is to remain in the main rivers of the SSRB for the aquatic environment and, conversely, how much water remains available for allocation.
The final plan recommends the best possible balance between water consumption and environmental protection, in light of economic and social objectives and ecological requirements. It sets a course for a new future for water management in the SSRB, one with innovative, efficient and productive water use and improved management of aquatic ecosystems. The plan also provides a foundation for future watershed management planning in the SSRB.
One of the key outcomes of the plan will be a Crown Reservation of water for the Bow, Oldman and South Saskatchewan River sub-basins. By establishing the Crown Reservation the Minister of Environment identifies purposes for which water licences may still be granted, and their priorities, from the unallocated water in these sub-basins.
