What Our Employees Have to Say...

Considering working with Alberta Finance? Here’s what some of our employees have to say about why they chose Alberta Finance and what motivates them to come to work everyday.

Unique Work Opportunities

Pamela Steppan
Senior Socio-Economic Analyst, Provincial Demographer

What’s the most interesting project Pamela has worked on while she has been with Finance? When the Alberta Government asked Albertans to provide advice on the Province’s policies in a debt-free Alberta, it was Pamela’s group that provided the statistical analysis of the 282,156 responses from the It’s Your Future survey.

In her position as Provincial Demographer, Pamela has had an opportunity to be involved in some unique work, to say the least. While the majority of Pamela’s day focuses around providing expert statistical advice to interdepartmental committees, ministry clients and senior management on socio-economic issues, demographics and survey methodology, Pamela has also had an opportunity to be involved in some very engaging projects.

Pamela is the Provincial delegate on the Federal/Provincial Committee on Census, the Federal/Provincial Committee on Demography, and the Federal/Provincial Committee on Social Statistics. Pamela has also acted as a technical advisor on a number of committees including the Alberta Electoral Boundaries Commission, the Aboriginal Data Initiative Committee and the Personnel Administration Office’s Human Resource Projection Model project.

Competency Development

David Mulyk
Senior Pension Compliance Officer

How do you balance working full time and completing a Masters of Business Administration? With a little flexibility and a lot of support!

David Mulyk is a Senior Pension Compliance Officer with Alberta Finance and has been working on his MBA part time since September of 2004. As a student in the public sector stream of the University of Alberta’s MBA program, David is able to put what he learns in the classroom into action in the workplace. Not only has the department provided financial support for tuition, it was David’s manager who actively encouraged him to apply for the program in the first place.

It is not just academic development that David has received support for during his employment with Alberta Finance but also career development. When the Senior Pension Compliance Officer position become available, David’s manager and colleagues within the department encouraged him to compete for the position and pursue the career development opportunity that it presented.

What’s the best thing about Alberta Finance in David’s mind? The chance for challenging but rewarding employment, the opportunity for development and advancement, a great work environment, skilled co-workers… the list just seems to keep on going.

Career Mobility

Tony Morehen
Chief Economist and
Executive Director, Economics and Public Finance

Tony Morehen moved from Ottawa to Alberta fifteen years ago to be the Manager of Economic Analysis with Alberta Finance and has not once regretted it. Now Tony is the Chief Economist and Executive Director, Economics and Public Finance, with three work units reporting to him, including his original work unit, Economic Analysis. Alberta Finance has assisted Tony in his career development by making sure that he has the tools and resources required to be successful in a changing, demanding work environment.

Working on a provincial scope allows Tony to be involved in a wide range of challenging and interesting economist work, an exciting prospect in an economically dynamic province like Alberta. For example, Tony had the opportunity last year to participate in the development of the government of Alberta’s twenty-year strategic plan. This cross ministry project was breaking new ground when it came to strategic planning and Tony and his group had the challenge of determining how to forecast a twenty-year fiscal outlook, something that has never been done before in provincial strategic planning.

What Tony appreciates about Finance is the team atmosphere, getting to work with bright minds and being involved in work that makes a difference for Albertans.

Job Enrichment

Lucianne Lavoie
Tax Officer

Lucianne Lavoie is a Tax Officer with the Corporate Income Tax program but lately she has been giving out money rather than collecting it. That is because Lucianne is on a secondment with the Tax Exempt Fuel Use program that provides tax rebates to Alberta businesses that purchase fuel for off road use.

It is the opportunity to work in different program areas and learn more about the organization that Lucianne values about being an employee of Alberta Finance. Since starting in 2000 Lucianne has been on two secondments: a six-month secondment with the Information Services Call Centre and her current one-year secondment with the Tax Exempt Fuel Use (TEFU) program. Both of these opportunities have given Lucianne the chance to develop a big picture view of Alberta’s provincial tax and benefit programs. In the call centre Lucianne, had to quickly become familiar with each one of tax and benefit programs so that she could effectively respond to calls from Albertans. With the TEFU program, Lucianne is developing a whole new skill set working on a program that is more manual than the highly computerized Corporate Income Tax program.

It is not only the secondments, but the overall learning environment that encourages employees to continually develop themselves that Lucianne feels is the best thing about working in Alberta Finance. She feels that working in a government organization that has a positive reputation outside of Alberta, that is innovative and a departure from the usual public service, is also pretty exciting!
