Welcome to Alberta's State of the Environment web site!
This is your gateway to an extensive collection of information about the state of Alberta's environment.
State of the Environment reporting is built around environmental indicators. These are important environmental factors that are monitored over time to detect trends and identify environmental issues. They include indicators that reflect environmental conditions, others that measure environmental pressures, and stewardship indicators that show what is being done about these conditions and pressures. Progress towards desired environmental goals or outcomes is also described.
The indicators and other information are organized around the main topics of Air, Water, Land, Biodiversity, Waste and Climate. Follow the links on this page for brief overviews of each topic. You'll also find maps and graphs of environmental trends with descriptions of each indicator, why it is important, what it shows us, and what actions are being taken. There are also links to technical reports, environmental data and other informative websites.
State of the Environment reporting continues to evolve. We welcome your feedback on the current set of indicators and the information you find on this site. Over time, this set of environmental indicators will be improved, refining some and adding others. New information will be added as it comes available.
If you have any suggestions or comments, please send an e-mail to SOE.Coordinator@gov.ab.ca or complete a short on-line questionnaire to provide your feedback.
