Christmas Tree Cutting

Are you looking for a Christmas tree? Did you know you can support the Junior Forest Warden program by obtaining your Christmas tree from a JFW site near Calgary? Or that you can cut your own Christmas tree on Crown land, with a permit from Sustainable Resource Development?

What would you like to do?

Need more information?

Cut my own Christmas tree on Crown land.

You can purchase a Christmas tree permit from one of the following SRD offices or private vendors for $5.30, including GST.

General Conditions For Cutting Christmas Trees

  • The permit is valid for 30 days. It authorizes the holder to cut up to three Christmas trees, each no taller than 2.5 metres.
  • Keep your permit with you at all times while cutting and transporting trees. Fill in the back of the permit, after obtaining your Christmas tree(s).
  • Drive vehicles on designated trails only, and highlighted roads as per maps. You can walk as far as you like to cut, as long as you do not cross into restricted area (see Restrictions, below).
  • Road conditions are variable. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended.
  • As of December 1, some roads are gated. Please refer to maps.

Restrictions - Do Not Remove Trees From:

  • Recreation areas, Campgrounds, Provincial Parks, Natural Areas, or Private Land.
  • Reclaimed sites, for example - areas around man-placed rocks, large grassy areas (reclaimed sand and gravel sites), very steep slopes where the trees are helping to keep the soil in place, previously harvested sites that have been reforested, etc.
  • Facilities, such as Ranger Stations, viewpoints, turnouts, etc.
  • Jumping Pound Demonstration Forest Area.

Useful Reminders:

  • Be prepared for cold weather and snow conditions.
  • Always let someone know where you are going and the time you are expecting to be back home.
  • Take extra winter clothing and emergency supplies with you, including blankets, food and water, candles, etc.
  • Don't forget your saw or hatchet.
  • Enjoy your Christmas Tree outing.
