The ninth annual Direct Seeding Advantage conference is being held on November 22 and 23, 2006, at the Executive Royal Inn in Nisku. This annual conference is one of the best kickoff events for the winter extension season. Attendance is limited to 150, which means that participants will be able to take advantage of a very important part of the conference, sharing information with their peers. The conference will be of special interest and help to farmers, agronomists and extension personnel.

“Matt Hagny, a leading no-till agronomist from Kansas, is the keynote speaker at this year’s conference,” says Rick Taillieu, agronomist with Reduced Tillage LINKAGES (RTL) and one of the conference organizers. “Hagny is one of the top consultants and students of no-till. Each year he conducts highly acclaimed seeding schools to assist producers in all aspects of no-till. Hagny will discuss advances in no-till systems on the central Great Plains and no doubt challenge some of our views.”

The conference also features other excellent researchers and agronomists who will discuss issues that are key to successful direct seeding. Speakers and their presentation subject include:

  • Dr. Neil Harker – integrated crop management
  • Dr. Chantal Hamel – soil biology and arbuscular mycorrhizal
  • Dr. Ross McKenzie – slow release nitrogen
  • Dr. Jason Cathcart and Rob Dunn – cropping systems and soil dynamics, long term results
  • Ken Sapsford – problem weeds and promising herbicides
  • Doug Moisey and Matt Stanford – canola in direct seeding
  • Karen Haugen-Kozyra – carbon credits and emissions trading.
The conference organizers have applied for Canadian Counselling Association (CCA) Continuing Education Units and Pesticide Applicators Credits.

The cost, which is generously subsidized by the RTL partners and sponsors, is $60 per person for members of the Farmer-To-Farmer Network, and $75 per person for non-members. The registration deadline is November 7, 2006.

Further information and registration forms can be obtained by contacting Rick Taillieu (780) 679-5174, e-mail rick @ reducedtillage.ca, or Deb Sutton (780) 415-1771. The registration form is also available on the Reduced Tillage LINKAGES website at www.reducedtillage.ca.
