Seeding Rate Calculator

Use this calculator to decide how much seed you need to plant to obtain the desired plant population and calibrate your seeder.

Germination should be based on seed tests. Seed mortality can vary greatly, depending on seed viability, soil, moisture and climatic conditions.

Desired plant density (plants/ft2) Refer to charts in Using 1,000 kernel weight for calculating seeding rates and harvest losses to determine desired plant density.
(Acceptable range 0.5 to 200)
Germination rate (%) Please enter germination rate in the 65 to 100 range.
Emergence mortality (%) Please enter emergence mortality rate in the 0 to 80 range.
Row Spacing (inches) Please enter row spacing in the 3 to 36 inches range.
1000-Kernel wt. (grams) Use actual figures when available. If your own figures are not available refer to 1,000 kernel seed weights listed in Using 1,000 kernel weight for calculating seeding rates and harvest losses.
Acres to be planted, if known
Price ($/lb), if known
