International Governance Office

The Alberta International Governance Office (IGO) was established to facilitate the provision of Alberta 's public sector expertise in international development projects. The IGO builds partnerships between the public and private sectors to undertake international development projects in the area of governance. In essence, the office provides the leadership, management and coordination for Alberta 's involvement in these development projects, with the ultimate goal of helping to build a more democratic, market-oriented world.

Within the international community, there is an increasing awareness that in order for aid to be effective and produce sustainable development, donors need to become actively involved in promoting good governance within country recipients. Without efficient structures of government, aid is often misguided or wasted, and has thus pushed building the capacity for effective governments to the forefront of aid programs. Building good governance can create the political, social and economic environment necessary to sustain reforms and projects, as well as to achieve an atmosphere conducive to investment and development.

"Good governance is perhaps the single most important factor in eradicating poverty and promoting development. By good governance is meant creating well-functioning and accountable institutions - political, judicial, and administrative."

- Kofi Annan, Secretary-General, United Nations
