2006 Council of the Federation Meeting

Canada's Premiers met in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador on July 26-28, 2006, for the annual Council of the Federation Summer Meeting. In addition to the fiscal imbalance, Premiers explored ways to advance key priorities such as post-secondary education and skills training and transportation infrastructure. Premiers also discussed the diverse economic challenges and opportunities facing provinces and territories and focused on issues and initiatives that have an impact on the health and well-being of Canadians.

2006 Western Premiers' Conference
Premiers from Canada's western provinces and territories met in Gimli, Manitoba on May 29-30, 2006, for their annual Western Premiers' Conference. Items for Premiers' discussion included: strengthening federal-provincial/territorial relations, agriculture, the green economy, pandemic preparedness, and sport and active living.

The Council of the Federation met  on April 11, 2006  with the Council's Advisory Panel on Fiscal Imbalance. Premiers received a presentation from the Advisory Panel's co-chairs on the Panel's report and recommendations.

Canada's Premiers Meet with the Premiers from the Commonwealth of Australia

The Council of the Federation met on April 11 and 12 in Montreal, Quebec, in a special joint meeting with Premiers from the Commonwealth of Australia. Premiers exchanged views and perspectives on Canadian and Australian federalism, and discussed issues of mutual concern and priority in Canada and Australia.

Meeting of First Ministers and National Aboriginal Leaders

Canada's First Ministers and National Aboriginal Leaders met in Kelowna, British Columbia from November 24-25, 2005 to discuss an 10-year plan on Strengthening Relationships and Closing the Gap with Canada's Aboriginal Peoples. First Ministers and Aboriginal Leaders agree d that broad indicators in education, housing and health will be used to assess progress.
