In response to extensive research and public consultation done over a number of years, public access is no longer available in some areas of Bow Valley Wildland Provincial Park and Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park. This includes the Upper Benchlands Trail upslope of the Silver Tip Golf Course. Limited access is allowed on designated trails. See maps of the affected areas.
Watch for signs and closure tape that will mark trails leading into these locations. The affected trails are scheduled to be dismantled and the area restored to its natural state.
Many other trails in and adjacent to Canmore are still available to the public, including the newly completed 2.3 km Montaigne-Traverse Trail that connects Canmore and Harvie Heights. More information about trails.
Areas that have been closed are important wildlife corridors, which are also very popular for outdoor activities. This presents a challenge in addressing the needs of wildlife, while at the same time providing tourism and recreation opportunities.
