Area Overview

The Town of Fairview is located at the intersection of Highway 2 and Secondary
Highway 64A, approximately 82 km southwest of Peace River and 115 km north of Grande Prairie. The town was named after an early homestead and prides itself on being the "Heart of the Peace". Fairview began as an agricultural service centre. Carving a niche for itself between the city of Grande Prairie to the south and the town of Peace River to the northeast, Fairview evolved as an important regional centre for education, government, health sector and resource sector services. Having celebrated its 75th Anniversary in 2003, the Town of Fairview remains integral to the vibrant future of the Peace Country.

What doesn't Fairview offer? The town has recreational facilities on par with urban centres twice its size! This includes an indoor arena, a four sheet curling club, indoor aquatic centre, skate board park, ball diamonds, sporting fields, paintball course and bowling alley. For the golfing enthusiast, there is a nine hole golf course with a full service club house. And on the NAIT campus, there is a quick three hole course.

Located just two kilometres on Highway 732, virtually the edge of town, Fairview's Cummings Lake and campground with electrical hook ups and group camping is just what you need! There's a lake full of perch, stocked annually with rainbow trout. The recreation area includes a campground, baseball diamonds, horseshoe pits, playground and the Cummings Lake Trail for walking, jogging, cycling or rollerblading.

Canoe the lake or use the 11 kilometres of trails, 5 kilometres which are paved, wandering through town, country, golf course, wetlands, boreal forest, play fields, campground picnic areas and historic museum. Not only can many varieties of wildlife be seen, it's also a birdwatcher's paradise. Over 75 identifiable species have been spotted on and around the Lake.

The Pioneer Museum Society operates the RCMP Museum - a treasure house of local memorabilia in a building once housing the local RCMP. the Pioneer Museum at Cummings Lake is a work in progress - eventually to be an entire pioneer village depicting the area's rich history.

The Fairview Fine Arts Centre, the heart of the cultural community, hosts ongoing and ever changing visual arts displays and shows by talented local artists. Local art is sold through the gift shop, adult courses are held in the fall and winter months, such as watercolur painting, wheel throwing, stained glass, and fun craft parties. Childrens
course are also offered after school through out the year. Open Houses, Tailgate parties and other events take place at the Centre to keep the young and old in touch with their creative side!

Summer brings big crowds and lots of fun and excitement. Music festivals abound and plenty of good food is to be enjoyed anong with great music by area musicians. Whoop
it up at the Annual Fairview Amateur Rodeo and Parade. There's something for you car buffs too! Peace Classic Wheels holds their Annual Car Show and Shine, along with Kid's Fest (www.fairviewkidsfest.com). And the North Peace Bracket Racing Association hosts several quarter mile bracket racing events on the airport runway throughout the summer months.

Economic Base

Fairview is poised for expansion and new economic development now and in the future. Strategically located in the Peace Country at the intersection of Highways 2 and 64A,
the Town of Fairview has the infrastructure to handle future economic development, be
it natural gas, oil, forestry, sand and gravel, iron ore, tourism and/or new technology sectors.

The Town of Fairview is a prime location for development, with suitable sub-divisions, adequate water, roads and sewers; all the infrastructure requirements for well planned successful economic development. ATCO provides Fairview's natural gas and electricity.

Fairview's water is pumped from the Peace River into town reservoirs. With plenty of reserve capacity, Fairview has a high quality water supply for residential, commercial and/or industrial use. In addition to the potential for recreational opportunities afforded by the Peace River, future hydro electric power generation stands to create further economic development (www.canhydro.com)

Fairview is served by a 28-member volunteer brigade, with three pumper units and two emergency units. [Tel: 780-835-3473].

Police Services
Fairview is served by an 7-member local detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police [RCMP] They participate in such police programs as Block Parents, Rural Crime Stoppers, Neighbourhood Watch, Victims Assistance and Citizens on Patrol. [Tel: 780-835-2211].

Location

The Town of Fairview is located in the Municipal District of Fairview #136, at the intersection of Highway 2 and Secondary Highway 64. It is approximately 82 km southwest of Peace River and 115 km north of Grand Prairie.

Post Secondary Education

Fairview continues its tradition of being a regional centre for education in the Peace Country.Serving students from around the globe, the Fairview Campus of the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) provides secondary education in trades and business.Beginning in 2004, over $4.0 million is being spent at Fairview Campus on infastructure including residences, renovations and relocations.

The nenowned Turf Grass, Harley Davidson Motorcycle and Bombardier programs were developed here; receiving world class accolades. In the Fairview College tradition of innovative programming, the ThinkBig program, relocated to the Fairview Campus of NAIT in 2004. 3. HIGHWAY SYSTEM
* Fairview is located at the junction of Highway 2 and Highway 64A (both paved, all weather highways) connecting Fairview with Peace River, Grande Prairie and Ft. St.
John. Fairview is also served by paved Secondary Highways 732 and 685. It is the alternate route to the Alaska Highway and the Northern Woods and Water Association route.

4. TRUCK TRANSPORT
* Grimshaw Trucking (all purpose carrier) provides daily truck service to Fairview, included in a distribution point. Inter-connecting points are serviced by other local carriers. Terminal building is located in Fairview's light industrial park.

* Rainbow Transport (all purpose carrier) provides daily service Monday through Saturday to Fairview. Points of distrubution are Edmonton, Rainbow Lake, High Level, Zama, Grimshaw, Peace River, Grande Prairie, and Fairview. Inter-connecting points are serviced by interlining to other local carriers. Rainbow Transport has a terminal facility in the light industrial park.

Water Supply
The water supply is taken from the Peace River, and there is a municipal reservoir. Water is subject to filtration, fluoridation, and chlorination and is distributed by a piped system.

Waste Management
Sewage collection is also by a piped system, and disposal is by detention ponds and lagoons.

Household garbage collection is weekly; collection from businesses occur 3 times per week. The North Peace Regional Landfill is located four miles north of Fairview.

Hours: Tuesday through Saturday - 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Recycling - Bins are provided at the IGA parking lot and the Public Works yard. The following can be collected: newsprint, office paper, glass, aluminum, steel and tin, plastics and milk cartons.
The bins are open 24/7.
