Area Overview

"Living on the Lake"

McLennan is a community of roughly 1000 residents located on the shores of the world reknowned Kimiwan Lake. Kimiwan Lake is widely recognized as the Bird Capital of Canada and as an internationally acclaimed natural wetland conservation habitat. The lake offers residents and tourists alike a bird's eye view of many of the native species or waterfowl and shorebirds which utilize the lake each year.

Community Services

Newcomers to McLennan are exposed to a wealth of local services, ranging in nature from banking to groceries, gas, hotel, a school and post secondary campus, automotive, medical/heath and resurant services just to name a few. Complementing the community's uncompromising level of granduer and appeal is an extensive network of recreational resources and services available to residents year-round. From hockey to golf, to baseball, soccer and tennis residents keep active year round.

Community Lifestyle

The first known mention of McLennan dates bck to more than 90 years to 1913 when a tender was issued to construct the Central Canadian Railway, which would traverse a route just west of the community and north to Peace River. THe town was named after Dr. J.K. McLennan who served at the time as secretary of the rail. Prior to the name change the community was known as Round Lake, a name derived from the native word "Kimiwan". The towns rich railway history is proudly displayed at the Golden Coach Museum. Rail continues to drive the economy under the auspices of MacKenzie Northern Railway.

Health Care

The Sacred Heart Community Health Centre is a modern facility with 20 acute care beds and 45 long term care beds. An active emergency room, physiotherapy department, diagnostic services and operating room allow you to treat the whole patient.
