Mayor and Council
Town of Onoway
Area Overview
Onoway is named after one of its earliest settlers, William P. Beaupre, whose name was translated to "Fairfield" in English, then changed to its Indian equivalent, "Onoway". The community officially became a Village on June 25, 1923. A municipal census in May, 2005 placed our population at 1036, so on September 1st, 2005, Onoway officially became a town!
Onoway is bisected by the Lac Ste. Anne Trail. This historic trail was the route that traders, Indians, pack trains and settlers used in the 1800's. Among the pioneers was Father Thibault who travelled the trail in 1842, from Fort Edmonton to Lac Ste. Anne, where he opened a Catholic Mission that still hosts 20,000 people at the annual Pilgrimage in July.
Community Services
Recreation programs are administered regionally by Lac Ste Anne County Recreation Department who provide residents access to a wide variety of exciting children's programs and interesting adult programs throughout the year. There are many service groups, clubs and organizations in Onoway, ranging from curling and hockey to the Royal Purple, Elks, Royal Canadian Legion, Red Cross and an active seniors group.
