Area Overview

Encompassing a large portion of northeastern Alberta, the M. D. of Bonnyville consists of over 1 million acres of farmland, and large expanses of natural parkland and lakes, surrounding the Bonnyville and Cold Lake areas. Strengthened by the resource industries of agriculture, petroleum, and forestry, the M. D. is one of the largest and most diversely developed rural districts in Alberta.

Economic Base

The strength of the local economy is trifold:
1) a diversified agricultural industry,
2) military/civilian services supporting Cold Lake Air Force Base 4-Wing,
3) large petroleum developments

All are serviced by many local businesses. The retail sector supports an area population of over 30,000 and has every service available.

Education

The M. D. is served by a public and separate school system.

  • Northern Lights School Division - Head Office 780-826-3415
  • Lakeland Catholic School District - Head Office 780-826-3764

All urban centres have numerous schools for all ages, and the rural areas also have centrally located public schools such as Ardmore and Iron River. All centres also feature a host of further ed classes and activities.

Emergency Services

With a full range of emergency services, the M. D. of Bonnyville ranks high in public safety. Ambulance services are coordinated throughout the urban centres, with full RCMP detachments operating out of Bonnyville and Cold Lake. Health Care Centres are abundant as all urban centres have hospital service, with the larger centres being a regional hospital. Fire department response is quick with the urban departments, and the rural areas are served by 8 strategically placed volunteer firehalls.
