Alberta Justice is gathering input from key stakeholders on how to improve the justice system, including a proposal to create a single trial court.
Nine workshops with several stakeholder groups were held in April and May 2003. Beginning in the summer 2003, Alberta Justice will continue consultations with the legal profession.
One option being considered is developing a single trial court - a brand new court that combines the best features of our current courts with some new features that will improve access to justice, create administrative efficiencies and ultimately streamline the system.
Two consultation documents, A single trial court as a focus for reform and a catalyst for change and A single trial court for Alberta have been developed to encourage discussion and feedback on this important issue.
The consultation builds on the findings of two public consultations - the 1998 All-Party MLA Consultation Committee and the 1999 Alberta Summit on Justice - both of which reflected a strong desire among Albertans for reforms to make the justice system more accessible, effective and efficient.
