Alberta Organized Crime Strategy
Since November 1998, the Alberta government has provided annual funding to the Criminal Intelligence Service Alberta (CISA). CISA's role has been to collect, analyse and distribute criminal intelligence to law enforcement agencies, conduct threat assessments of organized crime in the province, provide specialized police training and support joint force operations.
In 2003, the Alberta Solicitor General committed additional funds to strengthen the province's fight against organized crime and gangs. The new funding supported the establishment of an Integrated Organized Crime and Gang Enforcement Unit, directed by senior members of the RCMP and the Calgary and Edmonton police services.
In 2004, Alberta Justice, Special Prosecutions hired an additional two organized
crime prosecutors for Calgary and Edmonton bringing the total number of these
positions to four. The organized crime prosecutors are responsible for working
with federal and municipal law enforcement agencies and other prosecutors (provincially,
nationally and internationally), on operational issues related to organized crime,
such as: providing advice on investigations, conducting prosecutions and providing
educational assistance where requested, with the objective of dismantling and
disrupting organized crime activity in Alberta. The organized crime prosecutors
are responsible for the prosecution of all Criminal Code charges laid by the Alberta
Integrated Response to Organized Crime (IROC) agency.
