Where can I find information about the Student At Law Program at Alberta Justice?

Student At Law Program at Alberta Justice

Alberta Justice offers a well-rounded and extensive articling program designed to expose students to as many areas of the practice of law as possible.

Each year we typically hire 10 students (six for Edmonton, four for Calgary).


The application deadline for the 2007-2008 Student-At-Law program was May 10, 2006. The competition is now closed. Thank you to all applicants for their interest.

  • Civil Law Branch - barrister and solicitor work, including chambers applications, trial preparation, legal research and opinion work, drafting pleadings and commercial documents, advising government departments and agencies, observing and conducting discoveries and observing court proceedings and appeals.
  • Criminal Justice Division - conducting summary conviction prosecutions (primarily in Traffic Court), assisting Senior Crown prosecutors in preparing for trials involving indictable offences and researching and preparing Court of Appeal factums.
  • Family Law Branch - appearing in Provincial Court and Queen's Bench on maintenance enforcement matters, child welfare, paternity, and legal research.
  • Public Trustee - appearing in court on dependent adult applications, assessing quantum, and conducting estate matters.
  • Options - students may work in one or more specialized areas, such as Constitutional Law, Securities Commission, Environmental Law, Municipal Affairs, Environmental Prosecutions, Legislative Counsel, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Health & Wellness, or may return for more experience in one of the four areas listed above.
