Public Consultation

The Relevance of International Law in Canada

The Law Commission of Canada hosted a public consultation to discuss the relevance as well as the implementation and application of international law in Canada. The debate will be initiated by comments from leading experts and practitioners.

This public consultation is part of the Law Commission of Canada’s nation-wide consultations on Governance and Globalization: Issues for Law Reform and is being held in conjunction with the Canadian Council on International Law Conference “Fragmentation: Diversification and Expansion of International Law”, October 26 - 28, 2005 in Ottawa.

Speakers:

  • Senator Raynell Andreychuk, Chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Human Rights, former judge and diplomat.
  • Mr. Benoît Pelletier, Quebec Minister responsible for Canadian Intergovernmental Affairs, Francophones within Canada, the Agreement on Internal Trade, the Reform of Democratic Institutions and Access to Information.

Restorative Justice Symposium

The Ottawa Restorative Justice Week Planning Committee has organized a symposium targeted at the interests of a wide range of national partners to stimulate discussion about the potential role for a National Restorative Justice Association in Canada. By focussing on several key areas of interest, the primary purpose of the event is to provide participants the opportunity to exchange ideas and to participate in stimulating dialogue in a number of areas including: media relations & restorative justice; balancing the interests of stakeholders (victims, offender, community, government); meeting the needs of restorative justice practitioners; and, emerging research priorities.

Public Consultation

As part of their Community Conversations Series, Opportunities Waterloo Region is hosted a Public Consultation on "Is Work Working? Work Laws that do a Better Job".

This event is part of the Law Commission of Canada's national consultation on "Is Work Working".

One third of Canadian workers are involved in non-standard arrangements such as temporary work or self-employment.  The Community Conversations Series venue will act as a community forum to address your thoughts and ideas.

National Symposium on Crown-Métis Relations

Métis National Council (MNC) and Law Commission of Canada (LCC) co-hosted the national symposium on Crown-Métis Relations.

The symposium explored with academics, lawyers, government officials and Métis leadership the issues that require action and clarification in order to improve Crown-Métis relations. These sessions and discussions will focus on jurisdictional questions, the implications of the Supreme Court of Canada’s decisions on Métis rights, Métis identity, Métis self-government and the state of current Crown-Métis relations. Specifically, the following four areas will be tackled at the symposium:

  • Are the Métis people “Indians” within section 91(24) of the Constitution Act, 1867?;
  • The Doctrine of Inter-Jurisdictional Immunity and the Aboriginal Rights of the Métis;
  • Moving Forward on the Métis Self-Government Agenda; and
  • Métis Identification and Citizenship.

Canadian Forum on Women's Activism in Constitutional and Democratic Reform

3rd National Health Law Conference

This conference explored the role of the Supreme Court of Canada in shaping the development of health law and policy in Canada. Issues to be discussed include assisted suicide, informed consent, abortion, confidentiality of health information, and the public/private health system debate.
