The Role and Responsibilities of Commissioners

Collectively, the Commissioners are the ultimate decision-making body of the LAW COMMISSION OF CANADA. They are responsibile for developing the Commission's Strategic Agenda, adopting an Annual Work Plan and Programmes of Research, appointing the Advisory Council and chairing Study Panels for individual projects. They approve all Reports and Recommendations made in the name of the Commission.

Commissioners fix overall Commission policies and procedures and review major decisions taken by the Executive Director and Research Director in the application of Commission policies. They authorize, where necessary, any modifications to or departures from established policies.

Part-time Commissioners also advise the President as to the manner in which he or she should carry out the responsibilities of the titular head of the Commission. They guide the President in establishing and promoting the overall ethic of the Commission.

The Vice-President has all the powers and duties of the President if the President is absent or unable to act or if the office of President is vacant.
