• Malaysia military 'tracked' missing plane to west coast

The so-far fruitless search for a missing Malaysian airliner entered its fourth day on Tuesday, as sources in Europe, the United States and Asia voiced growing scepticism that the flight lost with 239 people on board was the target of an attack. The massive search has drawn in navies, military aircraft, coastguard and civilian vessels from 10 nations, but failed to turn up any trace of the Boeing 777-200ER that vanished about an hour into a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing early on Saturday. "Until now, with all of our efforts, there is very little hope for any good news about this plane," said the head of Vietnam's search and rescue effort, Pham Quy Tieu. The search was widened on Tuesday to a larger swathe of the Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea, around where the plane lost radio contact and vanished from radar screens.

  • India set to challenge U.S. for election-spending record

Indian politicians are expected to spend around $5 billion (2 billion pounds) on campaigning for elections next month - a sum second only to the most expensive U.S. presidential campaign of all time - in a splurge that could give India's floundering economy a temporary boost. India's campaign spend, which can include cash stuffed in envelopes as well as multi-million-dollar ad campaigns, has been estimated at 300 billion rupees (2.9 billion pounds) by the Centre for Media Studies, which tracks spending. That is triple the expenditure the centre said was spent on electioneering in the last national poll in 2009 - partly a reflection of a high-octane campaign by pro-business opposition candidate for prime minister, Narendra Modi, who started nationwide rallies and advertising last year. They are leaving no area untouched," said N. Bhaskara Rao, chairman of the Centre for Media Studies.

  • Squabbles over Varanasi seat within BJP, because of Modi: Oza

All Indian Women Congress President Shobha Oza, in a veiled attack on Narendra Modi, blamed him for the seat-related squabbles over Varanasi. "Modi has always acted as a dictator, starting from Gujarat itself, and now, he is implementing the same strategy to sideline leaders like L K Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi within the party on the national scene as well."Oza said. "Soon, the BJP is going to face the music, as he (Modi) has proved that there is a man who is running the show single-handedly." she added. However, senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj rejected suggestions of their being any differences within the rank and file of the BJP over who would be the candidate contesting the general elections from the Varanasi constituency.
