| The Red Deer Swine Technology Workshop is being held on October 24 and 25, 2006 at the Harvest Centre, Westerner Grounds, in Red Deer. This one-and-a-half day workshop focuses on production issues that are relevant to owner/operators, stock people, and farm managers. The program includes a tradeshow and provides a venue for the Western Canadian swine industry to come together and share ideas. The agenda features speakers from the Prairie Swine Centre Inc., Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, Western Canadian Swine Veterinarians, as well as consultants and producers serving the Alberta Pork Industry.
Workshop presentations include:
- the impact of litter size and finisher variability
- weaning age and the impact on finisher variability
- how live animal appearance is linked to lean yield and profitability
- social behaviour and management challenges in large finishing groups
- short talks on alternative feed ingredients
- the proper use of Oxytocin
- tools for batch farrowing and weaning
- the Stockhandler’s impact on cost control
- the benefits of split weaning gilts
- belly and scrotal ruptures
- an update on CFIA on-farm feed mill inspections
Registration fee for this seminar is $100 per person for both days and $65 per person to attend only one day. On the morning of October 24, an additional seminar titled Staff Shortages! Are Foreign Workers Your Solution? is being offered. This optional seminar will provide information on factors to consider in sourcing foreign workers, the processes involved, recruitment, and key settlement issues.
