First Nations Gaming Policy
In January 2001, the Government of Alberta formally introduced the First Nations Gaming Policy. In the words of then Gaming Minister Murray Smith, this “new policy provides interested First Nations with a road map to applying for and operating a casino facility.”
Based on Alberta’s unique charitable gaming model, the First Nations Gaming Policy provides the opportunity for Alberta’s First Nations to develop casino facilities on reserve. Through the First Nations Development Fund Grant Program, First Nations communities will have the means to support economic, social and community development projects as well as use charitable gaming proceeds for initiatives such as infrastructure and life skills training.
According to the policy, First Nation casinos will be located on reserve land, will be regulated by the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission and operate under the same terms and conditions as off-reserve casinos.
