| Thirty-two 4-H delegates ages 15 to 18 took part in the second annual 4-H Key Member program, on October 13 to 15, 2006. Members involved in the program are chosen by their district for a one-year term. They will spend the next twelve months acting as a member liaison, youth resource and role model in their respective 4-H district.
“Based on feedback from last year’s participants, much of the programming on the weekend training focused on building the delegates’ profils within their district so that they can be used more effectively,” says Nicole Hornett, special projects intern with Alberta 4-H and facilitator of key member training.
One of the profile building exercises had each key member fill out a KMSpace profile on the 4-H MySpace website. The profile includes all manner of information including their motivations behind being a key member.
The weekend was also a time for members to relax and reconnect. Delegates enjoyed two days filled with sessions in publicity, media releases, effective communication, ‘getting yourself known within your district’, etiquette, performance expectations and other sessions to help increase their general 4-H knowledge. Motivational speaker Phil Marshall spoke to making dreams into realities.
Delegates were also treated to yoga classes each morning and entertainment-filled evenings complete with karaoke fun.
“The best part is about to start,” says key member Rita Leask. “Now we get to take everything that we learned on the weekend, bring it back to our clubs and districts and start to make a difference.”
Sponsorship for the Key Member Training weekend was provided by Agrium.
