| | The second annual 4-H Small Animal, LifeSkills, Technology and Trade (SALTT) conference was held at the Alberta 4-H Centre near Westerose on October 20 to 22, 2006. The weekend was aimed at creating awareness and cultivating ideas for the leaders of 4-H clubs that are based more in the life skills, technology and trade component of 4-H projects.
SALTT drew representatives not only from Alberta, but from B.C. to Ontario. One of the strongest leadership resources that 4-H has is other leaders. SALTT provided a national opportunity to exchange project ideas and club practices.
“The environment at SALTT was conducive to learning and sharing. The conference gave delegates the chance to interact easily with one another,” commented session leader and planning committee member Nicole Hornett, special projects and programming 4-H intern.
One of the highlights of the conference was a presentation by Battle River/Wainwright MLA Doug Griffiths on rural renewal, titled Thirteen Ways to Kill a Community. The presentation prompted a lot of discussion and sharing of ideas on creating vibrant rural communities.
The conference included a number of sessions on crafts, projects, to a presentation on 4-H’s new “Exploring 4-H” project manual, by Sherry Dechant, the writer of Exploring 4-H. Rose Reisman, CityLine personality and McCain spokesperson, presented a session about managing the various demands that life puts on 4-H volunteer and leaders’ time.
SALTT committee member and 4-H leadership and resource development specialist, Terri Potter says, “There was a phenomenal turnout – everyone who was in attendance was engaged and involved in the activities and the programming. It was great to see the diversity of interests that exist within the framework of SALTT.”
