| 4-H is a lot more than learning about animals.
"4-H has always believed in offering choice, and believes in having those choices be limitless, " says Vanessa Goodman, marketing and communications 4-H specialist, Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, Edmonton. "You could be a member with a cooking project, or an outdoors project, or small engine, clothing, bio-diesel, event planning - anything that interests you and you want to learn more about, or maybe even help someone else learn about."
And, says Goodman, you might be able to get high school credits for it.
"If you are attending high school, credits for your 4-H project will make your class loads lighter, help you to gain experience in an area that you are already interested in, and set you up to meet a network of people your own age."
Trying to find a job now that you're done school or a scholarship to help pay for post-secondary?
"4-H has recently partnered with its sponsors to create a job board, which will be available soon via the 4-H website, in order to link potential employers with young adults with marketable skills and 4-H experience," explains Goodman. "For those looking for some help with tuition, 4-H has thousands of dollars in the form of grants, scholarships and bursaries to award to its members on an annual basis.
"For an annual fee of $40, 4-H provides fun to a young person's life," says Goodman. "It gives members a chance to interact with one another, to development their integrity, confidence and skill level by having created something on your very own and it provides the chance to win money, trips and honours. 4-H is a great way to meet friends, learn more, find a job and receive scholarships."
