Welcome to the NRCB

The Natural Resources Conservation Board (NRCB) is a regulatory agency of the Government of Alberta. It reviews proposals for projects that affect Alberta’s non-energy natural resources, and regulates Alberta’s confined feeding operations. The NRCB provides an objective decision-making process that takes into account the social, economic and environmental implications of each proposal.

The NRCB was established in 1991 under the Natural Resources Conservation Board Act. In 2002, it became responsible for regulating Alberta’s confined feeding operations as a result of changes to the Agricultural Operation Practices Act. The NRCB reports to the Minister of Sustainable Resource Development.

As a result of recommendations from an independent administrative review released on October 19, 2005, the functions of the board members and operations have been more clearly separated to better serve the NRCB’s quasi-judicial appeal role as well as its administrative functions. Changes are reflected in the new organizational chart.
