Expansion of a Grain Plant in Red Deer Good News for Area Farmers

From the Nov 22, 2006 Broadcast of Call of the LandCall of the Land Home

The expansion of the Permolex plant in Red Deer is good news for area farmers. I spoke with Terry Young, a farmer member of the Alberta Grain Commission, about what this means for producers.

Interview with Terry Young (1:01 minutes) (255 Kb)

Permolex operates a unique value-added grain fractionation facility in Red Deer. The facility is the first of its kind in North America, using feed grade wheat in its initial stages of production. The plant’s design incorporates leading edge technologies and processes to capitalize on the benefits of integration of three traditionally independent manufacturing processes, namely a flour mill, a gluten plant and an ethanol plant. This unique integration allows the by-products of one process to be utilized as feedstock for the next process.
