Security in Alberta

At this time, there is no indication of a threat specific to Alberta. The threat level is low. Federal intelligence sources will advise Alberta immediately should the status change.

Alberta has established a plan to identify and respond to potential threats.

Counter-terrorism and crisis management
The counter-terrorism and crisis management process established in Nov. 2002 lays out how provincial agencies, federal agencies, police forces, and others coordinate and respond to information and intelligence.

The process also outlines how information about probable threats is communicated to government, industry, first-responders, and the public to help ensure public safety.

Alberta's Security and Information Management (SIM) unit supports the flow of information between the public, industry, the province, and federal intelligence authorities. The unit also helps raise awareness of security issues.

Your role in security
All Albertans can promote security by being vigilant, and by reporting any suspicious activity that could be related to a security threat to a law enforcement agency.

The RCMP has established a confidential National Security Tip Line 1-800-420-5805 in support of the international fight against terrorism and to help ensure the safety and security of Canadians.

The public is encouraged to use this toll-free number to report any information regarding terrorism, criminal extremism or suspicious activities which could pose a threat to national safety and security.

Tips on planning for emergencies can help you prepare for any eventuality.

Emergency management
Through Emergency Management Alberta (EMA), the Alberta government is able to prepare for emergencies, respond to emergencies, and recover from emergencies in the province. Some of those activities include:

  • Coordinating the provincial response activities during a major emergency or disaster
  • Working with municipalities, industry and provincial government departments to ensure that people are trained and emergency plans are in place for when they’re needed
  • Coordinating counter-terrorism emergency planning and preparedness.
