Call of the Land Calendar for October 11, 2006

 And on our Call of the Land Calendar....Friday is the registration deadline for a honey bee pollination workshop that’s being held October 19 at the Scandia Honey Company. Presentations include dealing with impacts on crop pollination by mites, small hive beetles and Africanized honey bees; also colony strength and crop yield, and the effect of Alberta bee diets on spring build-up of honey bee colonies. Yellowhead County, the West Central Forage Association and West Central Conservation Group are hosting the 21st Annual Farmers’ Appreciation “Toonie” Pancake Breakfast at the Evansburg Legion Hall on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Upcoming Environmental Farm Plan Workshops are being held in New Sarepta tomorrow, La Crete and Clearwater County and Carmangay on Friday, Spirit River and Buck Lake on the 16th, Thorsby and Delburne and Lacombe on the 17th, Manning on the 18th, and Hines Creek and Sherwood Park on the 19th. Alberta Egg Producers are holding fall producer meetings this month—the 16th in Edmonton, the 19th in Lethbridge and the 20th in Airdrie.

Alberta Beef Producers Fall Producer Meetings get underway on October 23—7 p.m. at the Veteran Community Hall, then on the 24th at 7:30 p.m. at the Stavely Community Hall and 7 p.m. at the West Country Centre in Sundre. For a complete listing of meetings, go to www.albertabeef.org.

Yellowhead County is putting on a meeting dealing with landowner rights when the oil and gas companies come knocking and lease agreements between landowners. The meeting takes place on October 24 at the Niton Community Hall. Among the presenters, the Farmer’s Advocate will discuss rights and responsibilities of the landowner when development happens on your property. You are asked to pre-register by October 19 by phoning the Yellowhead County Wildwood Office at 1-800-814-3935.

The 8th Annual Red Deer Swine Technology Workshop is October 24 and 25 in Red Deer. In addition to the actual workshop, there’s an optional seminar on staff shortages. For information call the Ag Info Centre at 310-FARM.

Also on the 24th, there’s a Mineral Rights Information Centre at the Cultural Recreation Centre in Vulcan. For information call 403-245-4438.

October 26th is the Grassroots Cattle Conference in St. Paul. Find out how to increase your competitive advantage and keep your operation in top shape from leaders in the cattle industry. Topics include market trends, productive grazing management, animal health, marketing strategies and resource management. For tickets call 780-645-3301.

And just to give you a heads up on a national conference coming to Alberta next month. The 12th annual Canadian Agricultural Safety Association conference is in Canmore November 15 to 17. The theme Taking Care of Safety is Good business will provide an opportunity for industry professionals, farm owners and employees to discuss agricultural injury prevention from a risk management perspective.
