The Agricultural Operation Practices Act (AOPA) supports the sustainable growth of the livestock industry while protecting Alberta’s environment. In 2002, AOPA was amended to include a process for siting new and expanding confined feeding operations (CFOs) as well as defining province-wide manure management standards for all agricultural operations. As of October 1, 2006, regulatory changes were implemented to clarify and bring consistency to the legislation. The amendments include clarification or changes to definitions, livestock types, minimum distance separation, manure storage and liners, manure application and soil testing requirements.

New extension services are now available through Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development to complement the work of the Natural Resource Conservation Board (NRCB) in administering AOPA. Extension services will be available to producers, municipalities, consultants, neighbouring landowners and other interested parties. These services will help clients to access technical and educational information on the permit application process for building or expanding CFOs and on other AOPA requirements for the industry.

Services will be available from extension staff located at offices in Red Deer, Morinville and Lethbridge this fall.

For contact information, call the Ag-Info Centre at 310-FARM (3276), or an NRCB regional office in one of the following locations:

  • Lethbridge (403) 381-5166
  • Red Deer (403) 340-5241
  • Morinville (780) 939-1212
  • Fairview (780) 835-7111
