New fund supports energy development and environmental protection

A new Energy Innovation Fund will provide $200 million over the next three years for research, advanced technologies, market development, and innovative energy supply and environmental protection projects.

Projects under consideration will increase the efficiency and effectiveness of energy exploration, extraction or development in Alberta. The projects involve both renewable and non-renewable energy resources and focus on:

  • energy or environmental research
  • technology
  • innovation and efficiency

Examples of activities and areas that are being considered for funding include:

  • energy efficiency and renewable energy
  • bio-energy
  • gasification of coal and municipal waste
  • environmental research, such as groundwater mapping
  • land management and wildlife habitat research

This fiscal year, a total of $25 million will be provided through the Fund. This includes $5 million to enhance knowledge of oil sands reclamation and groundwater management across the province. Projects being funded by the $5 million include:

  • expanding the provincial groundwater network by adding more research wells
  • enhancing Alberta’s Groundwater Information System
  • developing a manual of best management practices for land reclamation
  • more information

The Energy Innovation Fund supports Alberta’s Integrated Energy Vision to build on world-class knowledge, expertise and leadership and responsibly develop the province’s vast energy resources for the benefit of current and future generations.
