Frequently Asked Questions

Following are some questions many employees ask as they think about using the Employee Assistance Program.  We realize that some of your questions may not be addressed below so please feel free to call the EAP Consultants: Kathy King in Edmonton at (780) 408-8489 or Keith Syverson in Calgary at (403) 297-3358 for more information.

Question Mark What is the Employee Assistance Program?

The Employee Assistance Program, or EAP, is a confidential assessment, counselling and referral service for any Alberta public service employee and their immediate family members (e.g., spouse, partner and dependent children).  The program is designed to provide direct access to experienced and caring professionals.

Question Mark Who can use our service?

All employees of the Alberta public service (e.g., full-time, part-time, contract, wage) as well as their immediate family members (e.g., spouse, partner and dependent children) can use the EAP.

Question Mark Is the EAP a confidential service?

Yes, your interest in seeking assistance from the EAP is a personal and private matter.  All information obtained through the program can only be disclosed with your permission or when required by law.

Question Mark How can the EAP help?

We can help with many kinds of emotional problems occurring in or outside of the workplace.  A person can receive assistance with difficulties such as:

Personal and/or work stress
Depression or anxiety
Marital problems
Interpersonal problems at work
Separation or divorce
Family issues
Grieving/loss
Substance use or abuse
Anger management

Question Mark What other services do we provide?

The EAP also provides consultation and assistance to managers, supervisors and human resource consultants dealing with employees whose performance has deteriorated because of personal and/or emotional problems.

Question Mark What happens when I use the EAP?

When you and your EAP Consultant discuss your concerns in a confidential manner, you will have an opportunity to develop some personal goals for your counselling.  These goals then become the focus of your counselling and are used to assist you on resolving the problems that led you to come to the EAP.

Question Mark What will the service cost?

The EAP services are free of charge to all Alberta Public Service employees and their immediate families.

When appropriate, individuals involved with the EAP may be referred to community resources (e.g., private practice psychologist) where there may be a service fee.  Employees may receive partial coverage for some psychological services provided under the Extended Medical Benefits Plan administered by Alberta Blue Cross.

Question Mark How do I contact the EAP?

The EAP has offices in Edmonton and Calgary, and consultants also travel to Red Deer and Lethbridge to provide services.  Assessment and referral services can also be provided by telephone when individuals are unable to receive in-person service.

Question Mark What are the qualifications of the EAP Consultants?

Our EAP Consultants are either Psychologists or Clinical Social Workers with extensive experience in providing caring and supportive therapeutic services.

Question Mark How long are counselling sessions and where do they take place?

Each counselling session typically lasts as long as necessary.  Typically sessions last between 60 to 90 minutes, and take place at our offices.
