Advanced Education

Agriculture, Food and Rural Development

Enables the growth of a globally competitive, sustainable agriculture and food industry through essential policy, legislation, information and services.

Children's Services

Promotes the development and well-being of children, youth and families.  Keeps children, youth and families safe and protected.  Promotes healthy communities for children, youth and families.

Community Development

Preserves and protects Alberta's cultural and natural heritage, and promotes community development, fairness and an inclusive society.

Economic Development

Provides strategic economic leadership and business intelligence.  Increases industry and regional development, trade promotion and investment attraction.  Facilitates tourism marketing and development.

Education

Through its leadership and work with stakeholders, ensures that learners are prepared for lifelong learning, work and citizenship so they are able to contribute to a democratic, knowledge-based and prosperous society.  (Kindergarten to Grade 12)

Energy

Accounts for approximately one-third of the revenue allocated under Alberta's provincial budget and just over half of the value of our province's total exports.  Albertans own 81 per cent of the province's oil, natural gas and other mineral resources.  The Department of Energy manages the sustained development of these resources in a responsible manner that optimizes long-term benefits to the province.

Environment

Manages the use of Alberta's diverse landscapes to sustain a healthy environment, a prosperous economy and strong communities.  Is committed to protecting the province's air, land, and water.  Strives to be a leader in addressing climate change and waste management.  Central to our mandate is the protection of the environment and the protection and management of water resources.

Finance

Takes responsibility for coordinating the provincial budget; managing the government's debt; forecasting Alberta's economic future; keeping taxes fair, competitive and simple; analyzing financials trends; regulating insurance, pensions and financial institutions; managing provincial revenues and investments; providing risk management; and regulating the province's capital market.

Gaming

Develops gaming and liquor policy; licences, regulates and monitors gaming and liquor activities as well as certain aspects of tobacco sales; supports initiatives to ensure integrity and social responsibility in the operating of gaming and liquor activities; collect gaming and liquor revenue; disburses provincial lottery revenues; supports initiatives to address problem gambling; and sponsors research through Alberta Gaming Research Council.

Government Services

Provides a diverse range of registry and consumer services that touch the daily lives of Albertans and also administers the province's privacy legislation.  Leads the Service Alberta initiative, which aims to make it easier for Albertans to access information and services from their government.  The ministry also includes the Regulatory Review Secretariat, which has a mandate to reduce regulatory red tape and complexity.

Health and Wellness

Leads and supports the province's public health system: sets the system's direction, sets and enforces public health policies and standards, provides funding to the health authorities, measures and reports on system performance; encourages and supports healthy living through health promotion and protection and disease and injury prevention; and manages the province's health care insurance plan."

Human Resources and Employment

Contributes to the Alberta advantage by working with partners to:  assist Albertans to reach their full potential in society and the economy; foster safe, fair, productive and innovative workplaces; and support those in need.

Infrastructure and Transportation

Contributes to Alberta's economic prosperity and quality of life through the provision and support of effective and safe road and bridge infrastructure, water management, municipal water and wastewater treatment facilities, and transportation safety programs, along with the responsibility for seniors' lodges, government buildings, property acquisition and disposal, and the government's vehicle and aircraft fleets.  Shares common responsibility with Alberta Education, Alberta Health and Wellness, and Alberta Advanced Education for capital programs related to the construction, expansion and upgrading of schools, health facilities, and post-secondary institutions.

Innovation and Science

Enhances the contribution of science, research and communications technology to the sustainable prosperity and quality of life of all Albertans.

International and Intergovernmental Relations

Leads the development of government-wide strategies and policies for Alberta's relations with international governments and organizations and with federal, provincial and territorial governments in Canada.

Justice and Attorney General

Serves Albertans by promoting safe communities, by ensuring access to the courts and other methods of dispute resolution by providing legal and related strategic services to the Government of Alberta, and by communicating with Albertans about the administration of justice.  Core businesses include:  prosecutions, courts, legal services to government, and legal services for vulnerable Albertans.

Municipal Affairs

Works in partnership with Alberta’s municipalities, other provincial government departments, our federal partners, local authorities, various organizations focused on local issues, and the private sector to ensure Albertans live in safe and sustainable communities and are served by open, effective, accountable and well-managed governments.

Personnel Administration Office

Provides corporate human resource strategies and policy frameworks that support the direction of government and the business of ministries.

Public Affairs Bureau

Coordinates Alberta Government communications activities.  The PAB places communications professionals within all government ministries to coordinate, plan and implement communications programs.  The PAB also manages the Alberta Government website, the Queen's Printer Bookstore, the Alberta Connects service and two Service Alberta Contact Centres located in Edmonton and Calgary.

Restructuring and Government Efficiency

Is committed to providing the core tools and services government requires to deliver effective and efficient programs and services to Albertans.  Is responsible for activities including:  pay and benefits, purchasing of goods and services, sorting and delivering mail, printing and copying documents; providing technical support for computers, telephones and faxes; and records management.  Provides strategic direction for the utilization of information and communications technology and Alberta Supernet.

Seniors and Community Supports

Provides services, programs and planning for seniors and the aging population; supports the provision and ongoing management of basic housing and emergency shelter for lower-income Albertans; provides programs, services, and supports to enable appropriate substitute decision making; provides assured income for the severely handicapped; and provides community supports to persons in care and persons with developmental disabilities.  The Ministry of Seniors consists of the Department of Seniors and Community Supports, the Seniors Advisory Council for Alberta, the Alberta Social Housing Corporation (ASHC), and the Premier's Council on the Status of Persons with Disabilities.

Solicitor General and Public Security

Serves Albertans by promoting safe communities and by communicating with Albertans about the administration of justice.  Core businesses include:  policing and crime prevention, victims' services, and corrections.

Sustainable Resource Development

Is responsible for public lands, fish and wildlife and forest management, including forest industry development to ensure all Albertans benefit from a balanced approach to renewable resource development.
