About the Alberta Children & Youth Initiative (ACYI)

Ensuring that children are safe, healthy and ready to learn is the most important goal of any society. Investing in families and communities through services that support healthy child and youth development creates the foundation for a strong society and economy.

Introduced in 1998, the Alberta Children and Youth Initiative (ACYI) is a collaborative partnership of government ministries working together on issues affecting children and youth. Its vision ensures that Alberta's children and youth are well cared for, safe, successful at learning, and healthy.

Children and youth issues cross many government ministries. This is both a challenge and an opportunity. The ACYI arose from recognition that a coordinated government-wide effort is critical for the effective and efficient support of children, youth and their families. Working together, government ministries and communities can more effectively address these issues.

The expected outcomes of this collaborative approach are:

  • Children are born healthy.
  • Children and youth are safe and free from abuse or neglect.
  • Provide resources to meet the needs of their children.
  • Aboriginal children and youth receive supports that are responsive to their cultural needs.
  • Children are ready to learn when they start school.
  • Children and youth succeed in school.
  • Children and youth practice healthy behaviours.
  • Youth are successful in the transition to adulthood.
We all have an important role to play…

Parents have the primary responsibility in raising their children, but communities, organizations, schools, businesses, and governments all have a role to play in helping to promote healthy children and youth. By supporting joint initiatives, government encourages communities to develop innovative approaches and solutions to meet the needs of Alberta's children and youth.

The ACYI provides a forum for dealing with children and youth issues from a broad-based perspective by using the expertise of the partnering ministries, communities, and Aboriginal people in developing strategies and initiatives. Strategies provide practical opportunities for organizations and individuals to work together for children, youth and their families.
