HEALTH REGIONS 
 
Long-term care
 
Long-term care involves regular treatment and continuing nursing care provided to seniors and others with persistent mental illnesses or physical disabilities.

Albertans are eligible to receive long-term care when they are no longer able to live independently within their communities.

Long-term care is provided at centres like auxiliary hospitals and institutional homes.

Services include:

  • nursing care
  • pharmacy services
  • nutrition services
  • physical therapy
  • housekeeping services, and laundry for bedding and linens
  • supplies for recreation programs
  • dressing and wound care supplies
  • incontinent products and bladder care equipment
  • transportation – including ambulance transport – for prescribed services
  • trust account services

Residents are responsible for:

  • accommodation charges
  • personal laundry services
  • hair care
  • personal goods and services
  • transportation for recreational purposes
  • services not covered by Alberta Aids to Daily Living and other benefit programs
