Barrier Free

In 1992, Alberta Transportation and Utilities (now Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation), established the Advisory Committee on Barrier Free Transportation. The formation of this Advisory Committee was based on a recommendation made in the 1990 Premier's Council on the Status of Persons with Disabilities' Action Plan. The Advisory Committee includes members representing consumers, service providers, industry, and government, as well as the Premier's Council on the Status of Persons with Disabilities and the Alberta Office of Disability Issues.

Through the Advisory Committee, Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation facilitates work on initiatives brought forward by the stakeholders to promote barrier free transportation. The Advisory Committee's objective is "to have barrier free transportation systems within the province that meet needs for local and intra-provincial travel, as well as barrier free pedestrian environments within municipalities."

This Web site provides information on the various projects and initiatives that the Advisory Committee and its working groups have completed or are currently working on. Although some of the documents were published a number of years ago, their content is still current and relevant.
