Teaching in Alberta

  • Becoming a Teacher - Thinking of a career in teaching? Find information about careers in teaching, including job profiles and post-secondary training in Alberta.
  • Council on Alberta Teaching Standards (COATS) - Find information about teacher professionalism, teacher preparation and certification, teaching quality, standards for teaching practice, teacher professional knowledge, and competencies (knowledge, skills and attributes) for quality teaching. The website also has information for individuals concerned about a teacher's teaching practices or conduct.
  • Working in Alberta - Looking for a place to teach in Alberta? School authorities are responsible for the hiring and placement of teachers. Find current job opportunities available across Alberta on the Education Canada Network.
  • Excellence in Teaching Awards Program - Teachers make lasting contributions. The love of learning they can instill in their students is a valuable gift that often lasts a lifetime. Alberta's Excellence in Teaching Awards Program recognizes the talented teachers who are dedicated to helping Alberta students succeed.
  • Teacher Certification - Alberta sets high standards for its teachers. To teach within the province you must be certificated through Alberta Education and meet the rigorous requirements that are outlined in the School Act.

Professional Development
Alberta's teachers are lifelong learners. Professional development and other learning opportunities equip them with the tools and knowledge they need to help students reach their full potential.

  • Bursaries for French Language Teachers- Find information on bursaries for professional development for teachers of French language, French as a second language and alternative French language programs (e.g. immersion, bilingual.)
  • Educator Exchange Programs - Teaching in another country is a professional development opportunity unlike any other. Teachers in Alberta can gain a global perspective by taking part in international educator exchange programs.
  • Teacher Growth, Supervision and Evaluation Policy - aims to ensure that each teacher's actions, judgements and decisions are in the best educational interests of students and support optimum learning.
