Albertans are charting exciting new courses in the fields of engineering, agriculture, medicine, telecommunications and other emerging technologies. Nowhere is the Albertan commitment to exploring frontiers more apparent than in our education system.

Thanks to a growing and prosperous economy, students have access to some of the most modern research facilities in the world. A constantly broadening cultural landscape also makes Alberta, Canada a great place to study, as people from around the world come to explore the opportunities available here.

Education in the Province of Alberta

Alberta is one of 10 provinces and 3 territories in Canada. No national or federal department of education exist here because the federal and provincial/territorial governments share the work of governing the country; the provincial and territorial governments have jurisdiction over education.

In Alberta, education from Kindergarten to Grade 12 (generally ages 6-18) is the responsibility of the Ministry of Education.

Post-secondary education, including universities, colleges and technical institutions, is the responsibility of the Ministry of Advanced Education.
