Video Lottery
Retailers
Since 1992, the
Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC) has managed and
collected revenues from video lotteries in Alberta. All VLTs
are located in age-restricted liquor-licensed venues known
as VLT retailers or video gaming entertainment rooms (VGERs).
VLT retailers have two to 10 VLTs, while VGERs, which have
higher facility standards, may have up to 25 VLTs.
The AGLC pays a
15 per cent commission to VLT retailers for the services provided.
After payment of prizes, retail commissions and federal tax
expenses, all income is directed into the Alberta
Lottery Fund, which is made up of revenues from VLTs,
slot machines, ticket lotteries and electronic bingo.
Since 1994, the
total number of VLTs has remained capped at 6,000. As a result
of the AGLC’s commitment to reduce the overall number
of locations, as recommended by the Gaming licensing Policy
Review, the number of VLT locations has been reduced by 14
per cent since 2001.
