HEALTH CARE INSURANCE PLAN

In accordance with the Canada Health Act, Alberta has a publicly administered and funded health care system that guarantees Albertans receive universal access to medically necessary hospital and health care services.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness through the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) provides residents of Alberta with full coverage for medically necessary physician and specific dental and oral surgical health services provided by dentists.  For more information view the Schedule of Medical Benefits and Schedule of Oral and Maxillofacial Benefits.

Alberta Health and Wellness provides health care benefits in addition to the services required by the the Canada Health Act. Chiropractic, podiatry and optometry are examples of additional services partially covered through the AHCIP.

Alberta has nine Regional Health Authorities (RHA) that provide further services beyond the basic provisions of the Canada Health Act. The RHAs are responsible for hospitals, continuing care facilities, community health services and public health programs in Alberta.

Government supported supplementary coverage is available through Alberta Blue Cross to cover a variety of health services not covered by the AHCIP.
