Rural landowners will have the opportunity to learn how groundwater is protected during coalbed methane development at a series of public meetings being held across central and southern Alberta during the month of June.

The meetings will include displays and presentations by government, industry, and individuals and groups representing landowner interests.

The presentations will focus on groundwater facts, regulatory requirements and groundwater protection initiatives. A question-and-answer session will follow.

Coalbed methane is regulated in Alberta under the same rules that apply to conventional oil and gas. The Energy and Utilities Board regulates drilling, production, transportation and other activities for the energy industry in Alberta.

These public information sessions support the Alberta government's Water for Life strategy by enhancing water education programs and improving access to water resource information and services. Six sessions have already been held and the dates and locations for the remaining sessions are:

  • June 19 - Lacombe, Terrace Ridge School
  • June 20 - Ponoka, Kinsmen Community Centre
  • June 21 - Stettler, Stettler Community Hall
  • June 22 - Fort Assiniboine, Legion Hall
  • June 26 - Pigeon Lake, Lake Dell Agriculture Society Hall
  • June 27 - Claresholm, Claresholm Community Centre
  • June 28 - Nanton, Nanton Community Memorial Centre
More information about the Water for Life strategy is available on the internet at www.waterforlife.gov.ab.ca.
